Flood Alerts For Tonight's High Tide Not Expected To Be Upgraded To Warning Levels

Flood Alerts remain in place for our local coastline tonight (Wednesday) - however, the Alerts are not expected to be upgraded to the Flood Warning level, the higher state of alert.

After a series of Flood Warnings were put in place yesterday afternoon (Tuesday), the lesser Flood Alerts remain for the Cumbria and North Lancashire coast as a precaution ahead of the next high tide, just after midnight.

That high tide is not expected to reach a Flood Warning level, as they did yesterday.

Drivers are however, being asked to avoid low lying coastal roads during times of high tides.

An update from the Environment Agency this afternoon reads: "A Flood Alert is in force for the high tide at 00:15 on 04/01/2018, tidal spray and onshore flooding may occur to roads and some properties along the coast may be affected.

"People are warned to stay away from the coast. Environment Agency officers are on the ground ensuring defences are in good working order, monitoring sea levels and wind directions.

"We forecast a tide height of 5.3 mAOD in this location. High water can be expected for 2 hours before and after the peak.

"Environment Agency staff are monitoring the situation and checking tidal defences.

"We currently forecast that this high tide at 00:15 on 04/01/18 will not be above the Flood Warning level."
