A crane fire closed the M6 northbound between junction 36 for Kirkby Lonsdale and junction 37 for Kendal on Thursday.
Smoke was blowing across the carriageway and exploding tyres left debris on the motorway.
Motorists were being warned to expect delays.
The southbound carriageway reopened by 11am.

Cumbria Police said: "There are no reports of any injuries. There are tailbacks currently as the fire service work to extinguish the fire and further delays are expected to allow the carriageway to be inspected once the fire is extinguished."
